***** Kat sighed as she made her way through Forks in the new Merceds Benz convertible that the Volturi had purchased for her to use while she was in Forks. She had arrived in Seattle, Washington late the night before from Italy and had found a man waiting for her when she stepped out of the airport with a sign that said her name and a set of keys to her brand new convertible. Kat had to give Aros credit. When he sent a vampire out on a mission he took care of all the details that would help them to blend more easily into society. Kat knew she was going to have one hell of a time finding anybody to feed off of in Forks so before she had made her way towards her new home she had made sure that she was well fed. She knew Seattle was filled with rapists, murders and other huge law breakers. Forks at the most probably had a few speeders, maybe a thief? They weren't the kind of people that Kat fed off of so she knew that she would end up having to leave Forks on a regular basis to make sure she stayed well fed and didn't attack humans in the town.
Pulling her car into a parking spot outside one of the small shops on what seemed to be Forks' main street, Kat cut the engine of her car then pushed open her door before stepping out. Curled up on the passenger seat of Kat's convertible was a new Siberian Husky puppy that Aros had gifted Kat as a companion for her trip to Washington. He knew that he couldn't send any of the other Volturi with Kat if his plan was to work so he had gotten the puppy for Kat as a companion so she wouldn't be completely alone in her new home. The thought behind her gift had touched Kat but at the same time she knew she couldn't let herself feel any sort of sentiment towards Aros or the rest of the Volturi. Edward would read her mind and for Aros plan to work she had to make Edward think that she was having second thoughts about the Volturi so had come out to join him and his coven.
Are we there yet?
The high pitched voice that entered her thoughts caused Kat to look into her passenger seat and smile at the sight there. Her puppy was on his hind legs with his front paws resting on the armrest of the door. His head was looking from side to side as he took in the scenery around them with his tail wagging. Shaking her head, Kat replied to the puppy by letting her own thoughts enter the thoughts of her new pet. "No I have to pick up the keys to our new home from the realtor across the street. She's supposed to show us how to find our new home since it's outside of town and I have no clue where we're going."
Smiling as the puppy turned to face her, Kat watched him jump over the center console to stand on her seat and face her. His tail wagging, the puppy asked if he could go with her to which Kat shook her head apologetically. "I don't know if they allow dogs in their office and I don't want to get in trouble. You just stay in the car and make sure nobody tries to steal it."
Smiling as her her puppy said he'd do it, Kat watched him jump into the backseat before he sat in the middle of it. His eyes were scanning the area around the car as if he was making sure nobody would come close to it which caused Kat to smile. Telling him she'd be back in a bit, Kat made her way towards the back of the car before looking both way. She may have been immortal but that didn't mean that she wanted to get hit by a car any time soon.

Shopping had never been one of Edward's favorite past times, even in his human life he had often refused to go down the shop, yet often back then, he had no choice. None the less Carlisle was busy with work and Emmett was probably out chasing girls despite already being joined. Then again, it would never stop his brother, that much Edward did know. Either way Edward had reluctantly agreed to take the trip to the shops, he at least owed Carlisle that, Parking his car into a tight parking spot, he cut the purr of the engine and stepped out of his car, the wind lashed up around him, and around the surrounding area, picking up the loose bag, or bits of rubbish, along with that it ruffled his bronze coloured hair. Locking the car he patted his back pocket to double check that he did still have his wallet. Thankfully he did, Moving among the cars he glanced around ignoring the many looks he received from the young groups of passing girls, whom giggled endlessly.
As he walked though the cars, he briefly recalled the list Carlisle had requested, most of it was food, which made no sense, yet Carlisle had insisted that they needed to up hold their general appearance, namely to appear somewhat human. Which was pointless in his opinion, as he passed a near by car, the sudden sound of barking erupted his moment of thought, he glanced to the dog that was barking in the window, it was a young thing that he noticed, still a dog was a dog to him, even the wolves and shape shifter, they were still only dogs, mutts, and mongrels. Although he didn't dislike animals, he never disliked them, but he would soon rather feed on them rather than humans, he had done that once, and it was the one time he did not wish to repeat. Shooting the dog a dark look it seemed to silence it for the most part although he could hear it whimper. Ignoring the creature Edward continued on, Looking down he reached into his back pocket for the small list, that Emmett had wanted, glancing over the list, he then memorized it before scrunching the list up and discarding it into the nearest bin, it was just then when awareness kicked in, looking up suddenly he stopped himself mid-stride before he collided with the on coming being, Whom was busy waiting.
However familiarity seared his mind, he knew her, knew her a great deal they had once been close friends, extremely close friends. Yet, the last he had seen of her she had stood beside Aro, they had talked a great deal he had once tired to invite her back with he and Carlilse, but she had refused, yet that had been several years back, since then they had not seen each other nor spoken to each other for at least 5 years? perhaps give or take a few? Taking a step as if to avoid her, bypass her, he stopped. What was she doing in Forks? Moving again, he lightly reached out his hand and briefly rested it upon her shoulder. "Katherine?" he questioned, although he knew without a doubt it was her, if her scent was anything to go by.

***** "Hello, my name is Katherine Lennox and we spoke over the phone. I'm here to pick up the keys to my new home." Katherine said with a pleasant smile as she extended her hand to the woman who sat behind the desk with the name plate that matched the name of the realtor had been negotiating with from Italy. Her Italian accent was heavy from all the years she'd spent in the country but underneath there was still that hint of a Chicago accent that few people had ever noticed. Those who had Katherine told them the truth to an extent. She told them that she was born in Chicago but had moved to Italy when she was a lot younger. It was the truth and people just assumed she meant she moved to Italy as a child which she supposed was true. Given her age now, she could definitely have been considered to be a child.
As the realtor introduced herself, Katherine was careful not to use too much force as she shook her hand then she nodded as the woman said she would get the keys then take Katherine to her new home. With the scent of not only the female realtor but two of her colleagues and a secretary in the air, Katherine said she'd wait outside for some fresh air. Katherine knew she was strong enough not to attack them but why put herself through the torture of being in a small room with a few humans. Instead Kat stepped outside and waited for the woman on the sidewalk as she let her eyes scan over the store fronts of the street. This was where she would be living for awhile and she wanted to start getting to know where things were. It wasn't until she heard the familiar voice that a smile formed automatically on Katherine's lips before she turned around.
"Edward." Katherine said with a hint of excitement in her voice. She was excited to see him and hadn't thought that find him would be so easy even in a small town like Forks. As Katherine looked at him through the gray colored contacts that she wore, gave him a quick hug before taking a step back. "I was hoping I wouldn't have to try and track you down. I'm fairly decent at finding those that I need to find but I'm definitely not a tracker. How have you been?"

In truth, Edward had almost forgotten what Katherine looked like after all of the years. He had to admit, he had barely even thought about her, although every now and then he he did once, briefly remember her. When she turned around he took a moment to look her over, she hadn't changed, of course why should she? but the main question remained, why had she come back to Forks of all places? It was one of the many question he needed to ask, and had to known the answers to. When she realized whom he was he was suddenly pulled into an embrace, that held a mixture of emotions combined together, returning the hug slightly he too stepped back and studied her as she spoke.
I was hoping I wouldn't have to try and track you down. I'm fairly decent at finding those that I need to find but I'm definitely not a tracker. How have you been? She stated and Edward smiled a slow crooked smile, one of his more recent trade marks. She had been looking for him? that was new. "Looking for me? How did you know I'd be here of all places, Not that I object to it, I just didn't expect you to come looking for me." he admitted with small smile "It's nice to see you too, and I have been well, nothing has changed all that much, what about you?" Edward questioned his golden eyes, reached for Katherine's own.
It was then he noticed the crimson tinge, she still hadn't changed her ways, that was obvious. Still he didn't dare mention it, they did not meet, to only continue constant arguments about which was the best thing to do. Glancing around he looked back to Katherine, he had always been the tallest of the two of them, and he looked slightly down to her. "What are you doing now?" He questioned, before he himself added. "I'm going to do a bit of shopping, your welcome to join me. What are you doing in Forks anyway?" he wondered out loud as he questioned her. Moving out of the way to let a few pedestrians past. Edward lent against the wall, his body turned to face hers.
(Sorry mine is so short lol)

***** Now came the hard part. Katherine knew that she had to keep her mind blank of any and all thoughts that could betray her but she also knew that she had to tell Edward the truth or some semblance of it. He would know if she were lying which meant she had to chose her words carefully without actually thinking about it. So without hesitation Katherine gave a half shrug and a small smile as she said: "I had a bit of help with that. I had a member of the Volturi track you down before I left so that I would know where I was going. He didn't realize at the time that I was planning on leaving the Volturi to try and find you to see if that offer you had made me a few years back was still good."
Nobody in the Volturi with the exception of Aros and possibly Marcos and Caius knew about Katherine's mission. Aros felt that the less people that knew about her mission the safer she was. Of course that meant that she was on the hit list of numerous Volturi members now but thanks to Aros, the tracker she had asked to track down the Cullen's was dead. He wouldn't risk any members of the Volturi jeopardizing his plan to bring the Cullen's back so he had gotten rid of the only person who knew where Katherine might be heading.
As the realtor stepped out of her office, Katherine smiled at her before looking at Edward. Lightly biting on her lower lip, Kat smiled nervously at her one time fiancee before saying: "I was just on my way to go see my new home. If you don't mind the small detour I would really love to have your company and I can bring you back then join you in your shopping if that's all right with you. I can tell you all about what brings me to Forks."
Katherine looked pointedly at the realtor who was standing next to her and looking at Edward. In her mind she thought I can't exactly explain everything with her here. Katherine hoped that Edward would take her up on her offer and join her for the drive out to her new place. She could only hope that Edward's curiosity would be strong enough for him to want to join her so he could learn why she had left Italy. She knew that although part of her was loyal to the Volturi, there was a small part of her that didn't agree with them. She couldn't bring herself to kill innocent humans no more then she could bring herself to kill innocent animals. In order to survive however she needed the blood and it was why she only targeted dangerous criminals. She hoped that being able to see both sides warring within her would make her story more believable to Edward. Although deep down inside of her she was loyal to Aros, Katherine only let her doubt and uncertainty show on the surface. That was all she wanted Edward to see.

As he waited for her reply, he noticed the very short hesitation as if she had been caught of by his question, none the less she quickly corrected herself with a smile, although the reply he got, in turn wasn't one he had expected. The Volturi? had helped track him down? Alarm bells rang silently in his head. Of course the Volturi knew, how could they not? they were purposefully tracking their every movements, although, having briefly visited Aro and his coven, Edward knew that Aro felt threatened by the Cullen's for the simple fact their number was slowly growing, the Denali coven had once mentioned that in time they may well join them, if that was the case then the Volturi would certainly have a reason to watch, and track their every movement. Perhaps Aro was just waiting for the opportunity for them to slip up? and therefore giving him the perfect, excuse, and perfect reason to take out their coven. He had known from the start Aro had offered him the option to join the Volturi, but Edward had declined, and would always decline as long as his family was alive. Even as he left Italy that day, Aro had offered him the position once again, and the answer remained the same.
Then when she mentioned about the offer, he took a moment to remember, he ha made two offers since they had last met, one had been partly an offer, the other had been an offer. Namely the part about offering Katherine a life with him and his family, and therefore the change in diet, was she really re-considering it? He smiled slightly, his arms folded across chest as he looked to her barely even believing the idea that Katherine would actually think about changing anything. It was both odd, yet interesting, and most certainly a good thing, although there was a small thing that did niggle at his mind. "Katherine, you know the offer will always remain, But..you love animals too much.. so why change? and why now?" he questioned, Once they had been best friends they had told each other everything, they had shared everything, they had even once been engaged, yet only because they had, had little choice in the matter, but times had changed now, situations had.
I was just on my way to go see my new home. If you don't mind the small detour I would really love to have your company and I can bring you back then join you in your shopping if that's all right with you. I can tell you all about what brings me to Forks.
Katherine spoke a moment later, in reply to his previous offer about going shopping. Still her own offer seemed just as interesting, it would present them with the chance to catch up with one another, after all of the years. Pausing for a moment, Edward considered it, he had little else planned for the day other then to possibly visit Bella later, it all depended on what was happening however. None the less Edward nodded, "Of course. I don't see why not, I'd be delighted." He smiled before he pushed off from the wall but before he could say anything more the woman whom she had been talking to moments ago appeared, and watched them with an intense gaze. So Katherine of course spoke although via means of silent communication, her thoughts and words echoed in his mind, he glanced to her and nodded, not needing to say anything more. He recalled faintly back in those times, when they communicated, they never really spoke as much as others, they communicated with looks, the occasional touch, they did still talk however, just not as much, perhaps that was just why their friendship had stayed as strong.

***** Smiling when Edward agreed to join her on her trip to her new house, Katherine looked towards the real estate agent who said she would lead them to the house. As she made her way towards her car, Katherine led Edward across the street. When she got to the car her puppy began barking excitedly until it caught site of Edward then he cringed away. Making his way closer to her side of the car, Katherine watched as the puppy seized Edward up then looked at her. After unlocking the doors, Katherine slid into the driver's seat then heard the familiar voice of her companion in her mind.
"He smells wrong Kat. He smells like you kind of so he's not a human but he smells like a mixture of animals as too. He's not right."
Kat had to bite her lip to keep from laughing at the innocent observation of her companion. Of course Edward would smell like a mixture of animals, the man fed on them. She knew it was the traces of their blood in Edward's body that her puppy was reacting to and as he stayed on her side of the car, Katherine waited until Edward was in the passenger seat to start up her car and pull out of her spot. Nodding towards the real estate agent who was already in her car in front of them, Katherine watched her head out of town and followed her. She made sure that she stayed close enough so that she could keep the real estate agent in her view but she made sure that she wasn't tailgating the woman. As the woman led them through the town, Katherine turned to look at Edward with a small smile.
"To answer your question Edward, I want to change. I just don't know that I can." Katherine said softly as she turned to look at the road in front of her again. Letting out a soft sigh, Katherine was quiet for a few seconds before she continued. "There's one thing I didn't tell you while you were in Italy a few years ago. One thing that just never came up since there really weren't too many animals in Volterra. You think I love animals too much to kill them right?"
Looking back at Edward, Katherine stared at him for a few seconds before she looked in her review mirror to see her puppy. He was sitting in the back seat behind her watching her and Edward curiously. Turning her attention back to Edward, Katherine sighed then said: "You know as a human I loved animals, I always seemed to be able to connect with them? Well....."
As she trailed off, Katherine wondered how Edward would take the news. She didn't think it should come as too big of a surprise since Edward could hear the thoughts of humans. After a shot pause Katherine continued. "You know how you can hear the thoughts of humans and vampires? You know what we're thinking when we think it and it allows you to silently communicate with us when you want to. Well I can do the same thing. The only difference is where you can hear human thoughts, I can hear animals. I know what's going through their head at that moment in time. I know their memories and everything."
Pausing there, Katherine looked forward in time to see a sign that said they were leaving Forks. As they followed the real estate agent down the winding road, part of Katherine wondered just how far her home was from the town but that thought was quickly pushed out of her thoughts as she glanced at Edward again. Sighing slightly she added: "I can't bring myself to kill innocent animals when I can hear them pleading for mercy in my head. Of course I can't bring myself to kill innocent humans either. The only humans I feed from are murderers, rapists and other dangerous criminals."

Silently Edward followed Katherine through the car park winding among the cars as he went, until they eventually reached a familiar car, which was parked a few spaces down from his own, at least he would know the way back if Katherine didn't, as he approached the car, frantic barking filled his ears, turning his gaze to wards the source of the noise he noticed the dog from earlier, although as soon as he set eyes upon it, it instantly became quiet, it's tail linked between it's legs as it scrambled over to Katherine's side of the car. It was no surprise, animals of any shape or form knew when death was approaching, he supposed he was somewhat death to them. Still it mattered little, climbing into the car, the dog moved further away, it's ears flicker slightly pinned against it's head. "I don't think you dog likes me all that much, I have to say it's the first time I have seen a vampire with a pet.." he muttered his golden gazed looked over the animal, whom seemed to return his own stare.
Of course it was always harder to control his blood lust for humans than it was for animals, so he could deal perfectly well, although the odd sense of hunger seemed to linger and his throat tingled softly. He cleared his throat an then looked ahead. Ignoring the passenger in the back seat. Soon they pulled away, winding his window down a fraction to ease the sense of dog, combined with food so to speak, he rested his elbow on the door frame, and pressed his fingers to his lips, idly. Soon Katherine begun to speak, where Edward tilted his head a fraction to look to her, she wasn't sure if she could change, although she wanted to? That usually was the same problem with most, even he had once faced that, and it had not been easy. There's one thing I didn't tell you while you were in Italy a few years ago. One thing that just never came up since there really weren't too many animals in Volterra. You think I love animals too much to kill them right? Katherine begun and Edward frowned softly, just where was this heading? None the less he listened and nodded, ignoring the whining from the dog in the back seat, who seemed both scared and apparently uncomfortable, even he knew that.
Then she went on to describing a connection she had with animals, this he remembered when they had been humans, a few of Edward's old friends had cornered a dog, and were about to hurl sticks, and the occasional stone at the creature, but Katherine had stopped them with his help and had ended up crying as the dog had bounded to wards her, it was odd if ever he saw something. Nodding he continued to listen, and a moment later Katherine soon admitted that she had a seemingly deeper connection. So much so that, she could even communicate with animals via their thoughts, of course he understood the humans thoughts, but animals? really? He looked to Katherine for a long moment, to see if this was some wild joke, yet, by the look on her face it was anything but that. Glancing to the dog behind he, looked back to Katherine. "Intresting..I never really thought that possible..then again, who am I to say otherwise?" he questioned with a small smile, still he nodded and accepted that fact. "I understand, now, why yo never really appealed to the idea of my diet.." he said, now choosing his words cautiously for both the dog's benefit and Katherine's, Then again, he doubted the dog could actually understand him.
"So your..friend, can he understand what I'm saying at the moment, or is it just you he understands?" he questioned, honestly curious about the matter. Then Katherine continued on about who, and what she hunted at the present time. At this, Edward frowned softly two minds, so much alike. With a small gentle sigh, he glanced out the window before he then looked to Katherine, his golden eyes searching her own. "It's not easy to kill anybody, or anything..If I had it my way, I would avoid killing..but it's not that easy..When I was first..turned, I rebelled, yes, rebelled. I killed hundreds of people, perhaps more, but the guilt, built and built, then I decided, If I killed those who did wrong, perhaps that would make me the better of them all? But in truth, it didn't change anything, the guilt was still there, I hear their pleas, their silent prayers, their screams echoed around me, even echo inside my mind still." Edward paused, and frowned deeply as he remembered, he had killed a young girl in his rage, she had only been about 16 or so, her younger brother was there with her, cowering in he corner, after he had killed that girl the guilt was to high, he had tried to speak to the boy, but he had screamed and begged for his life, with little choice, and with a torn, broken mind, he had too killed the boy, it had been those two deaths that had switched his decision to kill only the 'bad' people.
Looking down for a moment, he looked back to Katherine and continued. "We do what we have to do, because of what we are, not because we want to, and I'm sorry that I cannot change your diet, nor will I force you, I know how you feel, I know what it's like. But I had someone there for me. So I shall be here for you. If you wish to talk about anything..or need any advice I'll be there." he promised with a nod, before he return his gaze to the road, his fingers still trailed the line of his lips, with his gaze out the window, his expression distant, he could never escape his past, or what he had done. But it was done now, and there was nothing he could do to change it, other than to accept it.

***** "He can understand you." Katherine replied as she drove through the winding road behind the real estate agent. Listening to everything that Edward said, Katherine sighed softly and nodded as a small smirk formed on her lips. Shaking her head gently from side to side, Katherine waited until Edward was done talking then turned to look at him as her smirk changed into more of a sad kind of smile. "It's amazing how much different from each other we are now, at least as far as our diet goes, but we're still so much alike. The same thoughts and feelings motivate us to seek out our chosen pray even though our prey is so different."
Looking back out towards the road, Rachel was quiet for a few seconds as she thought back to her last few weeks of life. Her parents had loved her and they had loved Edward as well as his parents, but when they had gotten sick, her parents had practically written them off. First his father died and then him and his mother ended up in the hospital. Her parents had sent flowers to both their rooms but she had accidentally overheard them talking about finding her a new husband. The thought had appalled her. It wasn't as if she had loved Edward the way most engaged couples nowadays loved each other, but she had cared deeply for him. She couldn't even fathom taking anybody else as her husband at that time and she had made the decision to go visit Edward and his mother.
When Katherine's parents had found out about her first visit they had been furious as well as terrified. They were certain she had caught the disease and as a result they had actually gotten her an apartment of her own. They didn't want to come into contact with her since they were terrified of catching the disease themselves and all of her friends shared their fear. So for the last coupe of weeks of her life, Katherine had been alone. She cooked and took care of herself then went to visit Edward and his mother daily. On her last visit she had learned that Edward's mother had died. That day she had sat at Edward's side and held his hand as she sat in her chair and laid her head against his stomach crying. It was the next day that Katherine had been taken and turned into a vampire. It didn't take her long after she'd been turned to find out that Edward was dead and she had then left the Chicago area. She had loved her parents but after they had turned her out, she felt no need to stay in the area.
Taking her right hand off the steering wheel, Katherine closed her fingers around the chain that disappeared down under her shirt. Something else she had never told Edward when he had last visited her with the Volturri was that she still had the engagement ring he had given her. She had worn it on her finger for a few decades before finally getting a chain for it so she could wear it around her neck. They may not have technically been married when they had died but Katherine had told humans and vampires alike that she wasn't married any longer but she wore her ring because she was morning her husband's death. Edward had been her best friend and until she had found out he was alive she had continued to mourn his death as well as his parents since they had always treated her like a daughter.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there for you at the end Edward. If I hadn't been kidnapped on my way to the hospital by the vampire that turned me then I would have been there for you just like I'd been there for your parents until they died." Katherine said softly as she took her hand off the chain and placed it back on the steering wheel.

His questioned was answered shortly after, he looked back at the dog was was looking at him with wary and questioning eyes. Edward studied the mutt for a moment before he looked back ahead, and slightly to Katherine. "How can you honestly put up with the..odour of your companion? He smells just as bad, as some other dogs I know." he commented, the scent of dog never really appealed to him, and he doubted it did to any other vampire it was simply who they were, and the whole long story about past battles, vampires dogs or wolves, never got on well, that was a fact. None the less he continued on about all that had happened, what he had done and everything like that, a moment passed of silence before Katherine continued, his gaze fixed ahead at the car they were currently following. At this rate they would be soon enough reaching Seattle if they continued going for much longer, especially in this direction.
Katherine had commented about their difference of the both, in some respect they were, their diet was certainly an issue, but beneath all that, hey were still the same, very close to. In fact Katherine was often like the sister he never had, which was why he never really dared to explore his feelings further, when concerning Katherine. Yet he had cared deeply for her, the love he felt for her was different, from the love of a wife and husband. The silence stretched by, each were left to their own thoughts their own memories, he looked out the window, watching as the scenery flashed by, it was only then he was faintly away of images flickering in his mind, and thoughts, but they weren't his, but Katherine's. She was remembering everything, that last few weeks of her life, and the time they had left together, he doubted she even realized that she was broadcasting such things, he knew he should attempt to block them out, they were personal to her, yet he found himself unable, he wanted to see, wanted to remember too, He couldn't recall much of his human life.
He soon found himself partly seeing the last few days of his own life, him laying in hospital, alone and pale, his mother and father had died, he remembered the fever that tore at him, causing him to break into a cold sweat, he would shake uncontrollably, most of his time he would sleep, his energy always felt drained. He looked down, then the memories had been so fresh in her mind he felt like he was living them once again, briefly he glanced down to his hands, pale and cold death frozen in place. He took the moment to leave Katherine to her thoughts, and his mind stained with images of her crying over him, clutching at his hand, at life and at hope. Casting his golden gaze out the window he thought long and hard to the good parts of their life..the parties they had gone too, the dances they had shared, although often they mimicked their parents, in a childish humoring manner. He smiled faintly as he looked out the window, against their upbringing they had played tag, chased each other through the forest, and through the many mazes, staying out past curfew at times, he almost forgot how many times he had shown up at home, clothes torn and muddy, knees grazed. Of course he had often got some form of beating, but it had always been worth it.
Just then Katherine spoke pulling him out of his trip into the past, her tone was soft, apologetic, and it sounded sad. I'm sorry I wasn't there for you at the end Edward. If I hadn't been kidnapped on my way to the hospital by the vampire that turned me then I would have been there for you just like I'd been there for your parents until they died. Looking over to Katherine he smiled softly, before he reached out a slightly hesitant hand and squeezed her knee softly. "It doesn't matter, you were there more than enough for me. I know you would of been there, if you could." He commented as he removed his hand, once in hospital he had come around, only barely, his vision had been blurred and his breathing shallow, Katherine had been by his side, holding his hand, and he had woken, and muttered her name, as he had then with what little strength he had, had, squeezed her hand, in thanks, oddly they had even joked, even on his death bed, he remembered saying, that she wasn't getting rid of him that easily. That he would come back to haunt her in the end. They had laughed briefly although his laughs had turned into savage coughs into his tissue where blood had left him. He had only just managed to sit up that day, finding what strength he could, each step of the way, when death came he fought it, he guessed his strength deep down was Katherine knowing that he would see her the next day. He smiled softly to himself as he turned and looked out the window once more, where the peaks of rooftops were visible, and they once again entered civilization.

***** Placing her hand on Edward's as he placed his on her thigh, Katherine let out a soft sigh. She gave his hand a gentle squeeze before finally seeing the real estate agent turn down a small dirt road. As she placed her back on the steering wheel again, Katherine turned on to the dirt road and she couldn't stop the first thought from entering her mind of having to have the road paved. This dirt road would wreck havoc on her car and while she knew she could afford another car, she didn't want to have to keep buying a new one because her driveway tore it apart.
Turning to look at Edward, Katherine gave him an apologetic smile before looking forward guiltily. A part of her had always felt guilty about his death, as if her disappearance had killed him. When she had heard about his death, she had overheard a couple nurses talking about how he had seemed to be trying to fight as long as his fiancee had continued to visit him. After her visits had stopped he had only lasted a couple days more before dying. It had also left the hospital, her parents and their circle of friends wondering what had happened to her. Nobody had ever found her and she had heard numerous stories about how she had been murdered or how so and so had seen her as a street walker. Some even claimed she'd ran away with a circus that had been in the city at the time of her disappearance. Whatever the story, nobody had ever found Katherine's body and as far as she knew, her disappearance was still one of Chicago's unsolved cases.
The drive seemed to be about a mile long although it did wind around trees so it was probably only about half mile to three quarters of a mile away from the road itself. As they pulled up to the house, Katherine had to smile. It was next to a lake and the view was absolutely breathtaking. For a second she was upset about the fact that she would be living alone in the house but a soft bark from her backseat reminded her that she wouldn't be completely without companionship.
Cutting the engine to her car as she pulled up next to the real estate agent, Katherine slipped out of the driver's seat then watched as her puppy jumped from the back seat into her seat then out into the yard. With the driveway ending at the side of the house, Katherine moved to walk towards the front which had a view of the lake. Looking up at her house, a large smile formed on Katherine's lips before she turned to look at Edward.
Despite herself, Katherine couldn't help feeling that this was the life together that the two of them had been robbed of. Although they had been born in Chicago, Katherine had always told Edward about her desire to live in a home out by the lake and away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Part of her felt as if the two of them were a young married couple coming to their new home for the first time together and a part of her wanted to run up to Edward and give him a hug. Even if he himself hadn't gotten the home for her, in a way he was responsible for her having this home. If she hadn't come in search of him she never would have had a chance to realize her dream. Walking up to Edward, Katherine stood beside him as she turned to look back at her house and softly said: "It's what I've always dreamed about."
Hearing the real estate agent clearing her voice, Katherine turned to look at her then smiled as she began to make her way up a small flight of stairs that led to the balcony overlooking the lake. Following behind her, Katherine took the keys from her when they reached the front door before she stepped into a large open space that had the living room and dining room which opened up into the kitchen. Smiling at the real estate agent, Katherine held out her hand to shake the woman's. "It's absolutely perfect. Thank you."
After being led on a tour by the woman of her home, Katherine thanked the real estate agent then walked her to her car. As the woman drove away, Katherine headed back into her home before turning to look at Edward with a smile. "What do you think?"

He felt the gentle squeeze of Katherine's hand as she squeezed his hand, he looked to her and nodded his thanks before taking his hand back, he knew her thoughts, she blamed herself for his death, but it wasn't like that, he had never really died, he had been on the brink of death before Carlisle changed him. This he felt the need to voice "I never stopped believing for a moment Katherine, that you didn't care about me." he stated as they made their way down a fairly bumpy uneven road. Not that he minded all that much, he had driven over worse. Looking around the other houses became more distant, and not a moment to later a house loomed ahead, it was large and expensive looking he wondered just how she had manged to afford such a home, over the years he had been 'alive' he hadn't even gathered that much money to buy a house of this size what with the lake included, it was certainly bigger then the home that he lived at.
As the car rolled to a stop, and the engine cut, Katherine climbed out followed by her companion. In turn he to followed his golden eyes gazed out over the large expanse of lake, it was like something out of a movie, moonlit walks around the lake, gentle lights flickering it looked perfect. Shutting the car door he followed Katherine up the small amount of steps, the dog before him gave him a wary glance. Arching his eyebrow at the dog, it soon caused the creature to look else where, and to stand by his owners side. He waited silently behind, yet his gaze swooped the surroundings it was bigger than it appeared the house seemed to stretch on for a mile, or perhaps even longer, he couldn't help but wonder what the inside looked like, it was certainly a new build. As he studied the area he caught brief glimpses of Katherine's thoughts, what she thought, what she almost hoped. She had wanted this to be their first home, as a married couple, the idea seemed strange, especially in such a modern world. Katherine was beside him in the next moment, glancing to her, he hear her whispered sentence of disbelief. Yes, he knew that, many times Katherine had commented about when she was older she wanted to live in a house like this, with a lakeside view, a few pets, and children running around.
Even when they had been engaged for a short time, Katherine made it her mission in life to remind him, his own plan had been to get a good steady job in the medical career, he had even wanted to go into the army yet, he had been to young, but when he had turned 18, that had been his dream, his wish. Yet that had been taken from him, when he had fallen ill, just like the chance of a family too for Katherine that too had been taken away, nothing was as simply as it seemed, when situations changed your life also changed sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. knowing this, Edward reached out his hand and lightly squeezed her shoulder in comfort, he knew of her dreams, and only a small portion of it could be fulfilled. Removing his hand he waited as the door was opened and he followed Katherine into the large open space that was the living room. It was certainly large, there was limited furniture in such a space, clearly allowing room for any personalized furniture fittings. It's absolutely perfect. Thank you. Katherine said to the woman who shook her hand with a smile, Edward nodded to the woman, before he remained in the house as Katherine walked the woman back to her car.
Typically though, the woman's thoughts were the same as most woman, highlighting their attraction to him, and the small streak of jealousy and question, if he was taken, or if he was currently dating Katherine. He frowned and ignored the womans thoughts as he begun to slowly move around the house, admiring the build, it had the scent of a new build, it was large and open, as he moved to the sliding doors that opened onto the balcony, opening the doors, he slide them open and stepped out, the scent of freshwater filled the air, ducks lined the lake, ducking and diving among the water. Moving, he rested his arms on the balcony, his hands joined as he lent softly on them. It was peaceful hear, you couldn't hear the cars, nor could you see a road in sight other than the long dirt track. Awareness tingled the back of his neck, turning his head slightly he saw Katherine approach, as he watched the woman drive off. What do you think? She questioned, Edward smiled softly and nodded. "I like it, expensive but nice, how could you even afford such a place, it must of cost you a fortune, even I don't have enough money to afford a place like this." he admitted as he slowly straighted himself, his hands clasping the banister.

***** Katherine smiled as she moved to lean against the balcony and looked out over the lake. She had known this question was coming and with a laugh she was able to give him the truth of sorts. Yes the Volturi had paid for her home but with a shrug of her shoulders she turned to look at Edward without a single thought of Aro or any other member of the Volturi in her mind. Turning around so that she was leaning back against the railing, Katherine lightly gripped the banister as she looked at her former fiancee.
"I've made some really good investments over the years and they have flourished." Katherine said with a laugh. Thinking about how she had gotten really good at playing the stock market as a hobby of sorts, Katherine looked over her house before looking at Edward again and continuing. "My first investment was in the Hearst family. I don't know if you remember them but they owned one of the biggest papers in New York when we were alive. Well I watched the patriarch of that family and saw his determination as well as that of his sons. I knew that family would build an empire and as soon as I could I invested the little money my parents had given me, which by the standards back then was actually quite substantial, and I helped the Hearsts with a venture. Now the Hearst family owns not only one newspaper but countless papers, magazines, internet sites, television stations and so on. They're a media empire and with different hairstyles, clothing and everything I have been able to show up at events as a descendant of myself. I've also bought stocks in companies like Apple, Google and others when they were in the infancy. From my stocks I make usually between three to four hundred thousand dollars monthly. And that's during a bad month."
Katherine's smile lit up her face at the fact that she had been able to actually build up her own substantial wealth by herself. Sure she had taken a few hits over the years since the stock market was a gamble, but since she wasn't exactly a big spender her money had just continued to grow. With a gleam in her eyes, Katherine had to laugh again as she said: "And since I was living with the Volturi for awhile I didn't have to spend money on anything. Everything was provided for me. I played the stock market to keep myself entertained when I was bored and the money I made from it just sat in my bank account growing every month. Not to sound conceited or arrogant or anything, but to put it mildly, I'm loaded."
With a soft laugh, Katherine guiltily asked: "You don't think I'm a horrible person for that do you? I mean, you don't think I was horrid for letting the Volturi pay for everything I needed while I was building up my own wealth. I could have paid for my things but I didn't see why I should. The Volturi were taking care of their other members. Is it bad that I kind of used them to take care of me?"
Feeling somewhat guilty, Katherine thought about how she did use the Volturi. She hadn't honestly thought about the fact that she could have paid for her own things until she'd explained things to Edward. A wave of guilt washed over Katherine for a few moments before she turned to look at Edward with a small sheepish smile. With a somewhat embarrassed laugh she said: "Now I feel like I should call Aro or somebody and offer to reimburse them for having taken care of me all these years."

Still as he leaned against the balcony he turned his head to look at Katherine, it was like old times all over again the memories came thick and fast, and there were memories he didn't want to let go, from what he remembered of his childhood, of his human life. As he glanced to Katherine he could practically see the clogs turning in her mind as well as almost hear them. I've made some really good investments over the years and they have flourished. Katherine begun, he watched her intently as she spoke as he tried to work out if they were fabricated lies or if they were actually the truth, yet he detected no form of lie, in fact he was almost ashamed that he had even thought that she could or would lie to him. He smiled softly as he listened to her story of how she had come by such rich investments and such a high amount of money, he couldn't quite believe how much she had made, how much she had clearly bloomed, and how much of an independent woman she had turned into, he smiled softly at this, she had both changed yet hadn't at the same time.
Watching her he listened as she continued to speak more about how she still had managed to hold onto such money, of course he wasn't at all surprised to find out that the Volturi were involved, of course she had stayed with them, for who knew how many years, of course they would of paid for everything, within reason he would imagine. He couldn't quite see Aro as the generous type, without some form of price, or exchange in return, that was how Aro always seemed to work. Although the look he received from Katherine she seemed worried about something, guilty perhaps, although the thought that she was actually guilty about the Volturi irritated him. Slowly he shook his head, "No, I don' think you are a horrible person, Katherine, it was there and they offered, if they expected something back in return then they would of asked for it already." He admitted with a small shrug, standing there, and offering Katherine advice reminded him too so much of he old days, when they would talk about everything and anything, even things that's their very own parents didn't know, things they never told their parents for that matter, which was indeed quite a few things.
Still Katherine's guilt was evident on her expression, he sighed softly and moved slowly so that he now face her completely he reached out his hands and grasped her upper arms softly in support and encouragement. "Katherine, don't worry about it, as I said if they wanted anything, they would of certainly told you, or they are waiting for the time to tell you what it is they want and I would imagine it would be something big, but you don't owe them anything, you shouldn't have to." he paused and frowned lightly before he continued. "I know it's not my place to say Katherine, but they are no good, they don't do what they are supposed to do, It's why I want nothing to do with them, and I would not give up my family for them..but there is another reason..one that has yet to solidify, but it's a reason none the less." Edward stated with a small almost secretive smile, as he then ran his hands down her arm, before dropping them back by his sides.

***** "I guess I've got dad's voice stuck in my head." Katherine said with a small smile as she looked at Edward and shifted her body so that she was facing him more. Looking out over the lake, Katherine remembered how even though her father was for the most part a friendly person, he had never fully trusted people. He was a firm believer in people expecting something for every little thing and it was why he rarely ever asked favors of anybody. He knew that once he did then he was obligated to return to the favor. As she turned her attention back to Edward, Katherine smiled slightly and said: "You don't get something for nothing right? I keep expecting for Aro or Caius to show up and demand some form of payment for those nearly three decades that they took care of me."
Ever since she had first arrived with the Volturi it had been Aro and Caius that she had always been wary of. Marcus although intimidating didn't frighten her. Even vampires like Jane and her brother Alec didn't worry her as much as Aro or Caius since they were two of the three vampires who controlled everybody in Volterra and as long as Katherine did as she was asked, nobody bothered her.
"I guess it's a good thing both have their partners or who knows what kind of things they might have asked of me as payment for taking care of me." Katherine said with a shudder as she voiced the one fear that had always haunted her while she was with the Volturi. As long as their wives lived, Aro and Caius had their female companionship and had no reason to look anywhere else. If something had ever happened to one of those two women, would Aro and Caius turn into Marcus who was no more then a living shell since his wife's passing, or would Aro and Caius turn on the female members of Volturi and expect them to satisfy their needs.
"And what's the one thing that has yet to solidify that keeps you from joining the Volturi?" Katherine asked as she tried to turn the subject away from her own fears. She really wasn't comfortable discussing her fears and weaknesses with other people. It was yet another lesson she had learned from her father. People used your fears and weaknesses against you. If you gave them half a chance, people would use your fears and weaknesses to hurt you. It wasn't like Katherine expected Edward to use her fears against her but out of habit she tried to change the direction of their conversation. With a smile on her lips and laughter in both her voice and eyes Katherine asked: "Have you found yourself a girlfriend?"
