Many centuries have passed without a hitch, humans and vampires living together in harmony. Humans no longer worry about being attacked in the middle of the night, the Law of Willingness protecting them night after night. The Law of Willingness states that vampires may only drink from a willing human host, should they go against the law, the punishment is death and starvation, whichever comes first.
