what . you. want. to. feel. Of course, she and Alice had never finished their English speech.
They had had about three lessons this week to work on it. All they had done was practised their closing act--Sam was dying to chuck in the one-handed cartwheel she'd been working on for the last month. They had also found out the latest gossip--Bethany had cheated on Chad! With a man twice her age! But as far as any sort of real substance in their speech, they were lacking. And they were supposed to be performing it tomorrow. Of course, Sam was stressing. A hell of a lot. She couldn’t wait to get inside Alice’s bedroom, were only gossip and chocolate would really matter and she could just forget all the added stress of high school. Like homework. And shit teachers, who thought they knew everything and couldn’t honestly relate to her at all.
The car pulled up to the driveway, next to the green forest that had always fuelled Sam’s imaginations. They’d gone on all sorts of adventures when they had been young and immature; when they had first started high school. She leant across to the driver’s seat, pecking her dad happily on the check. “Thankyou Daddy!” He just nodded, that I’m-too-manly-for –kisses-nod that she had come to adore over the years. She balanced everything in her arms, kicking open the door as she did so, before slamming it shut behind her. She made her way up to the door, a bundle of excitement and anxiety. This was it. They had to get their English speech done. But there was that guy she’d seen Alice chatting to, in the hall way one day. A very incredibly cute guy. Her heart thumped, dying to know everything. Why hadn’t Alice already told her already though? It was unlike Alice to keep something to herself. She could remember all their sleepovers, giggling over all sorts of guys. It had felt like ages ago. Both of them had been busy—Alice with her cheerleading, Sam with her riding. And yet, reaching the door, whilst trying to balance a collection of English texts and notes, as well as an unnecessary amount of lollies and chocolate, she felt completely at home. “ALICE! Come get the door! My arms are about to drop!” And then without thinking, she added in, “Sorry for yelling Esme!”

***** "Hey mom Doe is supposed to come over to work on an English speech. If she gets here before I get out of the shower will you let her in?" Alice called out to her mother as she ran up the stairs in her workout clothes with her cheerleading bag hanging from her shoulder. When she reached her room, Alice dropped her bag on the floor by her closet then grabbed her robe and a towel which were hanging behind her door and headed for the bathroom across the hall. It was the bathroom she shared with her sister but if she was honest Alice had to admit that she spent more time in the bathroom then Bella did. Bella could get ready in a few minutes where it would take Alice at the very least an hour to get ready and that was if she just did face powder and mascara.
After turning on the shower to let the water warm up, Alice quickly stripped down to nothing then stepped into the shower. She knew she had about an hour before her friend was supposed to get there which meant that she had to either take a quick shower so she could do her makeup or she could take her usual leisurely shower but she might not be completely ready when her friend finally arrived. It didn't take Alice long to decide that she would take a quick shower and about ten minutes later Alice was shutting off the water and pulling on her robe before wrapping her hair up in the extra towel she had brought.
After leaving the bathroom, Alice stepped into her room and closed the door behind her. She had already decided what she was going to wear so after pulling on her pair of jeans and her t-shirt, Alice made her way to the bathroom where she quickly did her hair in a messy bun at the back of her head then applied some light makeup. With that done, Alice hurried back to her room then began looking for backpack. When she realized she had left it in her car, Alice silently cursed then pulled on a pair of sneakers and a light jacket before grabbing her keys and running down the stairs. It didn't take her long to grab her backpack then head back to the house where she took it up to her room and dropped it on the bed. She was about to start pulling things out when she heard a car pull up and made her way towards her window which looked out over the driveway. Laughing when she saw her friend heading towards the front door, Alice began to head for the stairs in time to hear her friends yell.
"Got it." Alice yelled out with a laugh so that her mother would know that she wouldn't have to open the door after all. When she reached the front door, Alice pulled it open and smiled at the girl in front of her. Samantha Jane Dole and Alice had been friends for years but Alice was probably the only person in the world who called her Doe. When she had been asked why she called her that, Alice had said it was because her middle and last name sounded like Jane Doe which was the equivalent to the John Doe for females. It wasn't that Alice ever hoped her friend was in a position where she couldn't be identified but the name was similar and as a result Alice had started calling her Doe. Plus there had been occasions where Alice had made comments that had made her friends eyes grow as large as saucers and it reminded Alice of a deer in a headlights. Since a doe was a female deer, it all just made sense to her.
"Hey Doe. Let me help you with that." Alice said as she took the sweets and a couple books from her friend before turning and leading her up the stairs towards her room.

what . you. want. to. feel. She loved Alice. Sometimes, she even loved the silly nickname Alice had come up with, ages ago. Something about being a guy. And something to do with legal rights. So it was pretty obvious that Alice was the only person who called her this. And occasionally Esme, when the name just accidentally slipped out, followed by a rush of an apology.
The door swung upon wildly, with the hurricane that was Alice standing behind it. Maybe she loved Alice because she was so alive. Everything she did was followed by a laugh or smile. She was so unpredictable, always sweeping Sam away on some wild escapade. But at the same time, she was so fiercely dependable. Sam had countless memories of running to Alice for help—whether it was just for advice, or a shoulder to cry on. Somehow, for some reason, Alice had always been there. This hurricane that Sam had crossed paths with.
”Hey Doe. Let me help you with that,” And before Sam had gotten the chance to protest, Alice had snatched the bag of lollies—typically—while pulling out a couple of books from the pile. Sam automatically shifted the rest into one arm, sighing with relief as she did. This year had been such a pain. She had countless number of books and notes, all carelessly tucked underneath her bed. As much as she wanted to be organised, she never was. Probably just because she could never find the time to be. Already, Alice had swept through the hallway, skipping up the stairs in her usually energetic pace. Sam turned automatically towards the kitchen first. “Afternoon Esme. Thanks for letting me come over,” And then she bounded up the stairs after her first, following her into her room.
She chucked all her stuff on Alice’s bed, before returning to shut the door. She hovered in front of it, barricading it, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. She tried putting on her tough look—the one that Alice always said made her look like she was about to cry, not yell—but a smile started to part her face within seconds. So she stomped her foot, like a child about to throw a tantrum, while staring across the room to Alice. “Alice,” she began loudly, in a stern voice. Her voice collapsed to an excited whisper. “Why haven’t you told me about that cute guy yet? The one you were with on Monday! Oh, Beth said he was so into you. She could tell by the way he looked at you,” She paused, holding up one finger to tell Alice she wasn’t finished yet. She closed her eyes, took in a deep breath, before reciting what Bethany had said to her the other day. “She said... ‘He kept looking at her like he was going to eat her. It was kinda sexy.’ And that is a direct quote” She said, grinning ridiculously. She moved across the room, collapsing on the bed on her stomach, one hand reaching across to tear open a back of rattlesnakes, still expectantly waiting for Alice’s reply.
So much for the English speech.

***** The two had just entered Alice's room when suddenly Doe had the bedroom door locked and barricaded. Looking up at her friend, Alice's eyebrow raised questioningly until she began her onslaught. Laughter filled Alice's eyes as her friend demanded to be told about Jasper and Alice shook her head at their friend Bethany's exaggeration. How could Beth think that Jasper was looking at her so intensely. Bethany loved to make things seem like they were bigger then they were and since Alice didn't know how to argue Bethany's comment without her friend accusing her of just trying to brush it off, Alice settled down on her bed and made a face. Leaning back against the headboard, Alice figured the best thing to do in this situation was just tell Doe what she wanted to know and maybe she'd let it go so they could begin to work on their speech.
"His name is Jasper and we were on our way to lunch so I don't think he was looking at me like he wanted to eat me. Bethany probably got desire with hunger mixed up and thought he was looking at me like he wanted to me when in reality he just wanted to eat. You know Bethany tends to blow things out of proportion." Alice said trying to make her friendship with Jasper seem like it was completely casual when in reality it had her completely topsy turvy. Alice had decided to just give up and admit that she liked the new student but that was something she'd only admit to herself. She wasn't quite ready to admit it to anybody else yet since she didn't want news of her crush to begin circulating Forks High. She had always been known for being the calm and level headed one in her group but around Jasper she was anything but. Around him she was a complete airhead and just said whatever popped into her mind. Hell she'd told him about her dream where he glittered in the sun. She was sure he had to think she was nuts.
"He's a really sweet guy but you're making it sound like I'm trying to keep some big secret from you. I swear nothing has happened." Alice said even though in her mind she could still feel his lips pressed against hers for the first time in the meadow. Smiling at her friend and still trying to make everything sound casual Alice said: "He's just a new guy who needs help learning the ropes around Forks. You should meet him. I'm sure you'd get along with him."
