Every teenager has a dream, some more than others, to be great - to be famous. But what happens when you're nowhere near the Hollywood or New York scene? When you come from a small backwater town no one has ever heard about, becoming famous is damn near impossible. Here in Chickpea, North Dakota, a dream is just another sad song you can never overcome. Welcome to a place where the division in districts splits the town in two, where rivalries between sides sprout from the two local high schools. This is your home, since you were a child, and probably for the rest of your life. But it doesn't hurt to dream, to have that aspiration of one day becoming more than a minuscule number to hallmark the population of your tiny town. And for a couple minutes, you can feel that fame - when the spotlight is burning down on the stage, and you're performing with your glee club. It only lasts a second - maybe a minute if you're lucky - but it's enough to keep those teenage dreams alive... until you're reminded of your low stature on the social ladder with an ice-cold slushie to the face.
Glee club is the one thing these kids have when their dreams are nothing but far off hopes and yearnings. It makes them feel, even just for a moment, that there's a place for them beyond Chickpea. But the question isn't 'how to get there' - it's 'how much lying, cheating, and stealing will you have to do along the way'.
